CELEBRATE NATIONAL TRAILS DAY AT BEACON ROCK STATE PARK! -- June 1, 2013
What: National Trails Day
Who: Mazamas, Beacon Rock Climbing Association, Washington Trails Association, Friends of the Gorge, Forest Service, Beacon Rock State Park (WA State Parks System) and independent hikers
When: Saturday, June 1, 10am (hiking) til 3pm – food and drinks (noon to sunset)
Where: Beacon Rock State Park, Columbia River Gorge, Hwy 14.
Why: American Hiking Society's National Trails Day® is the country's largest celebration of trails. Thousands of NTD activities will be happening all over the country. Events include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, birdwatching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more.
This is a Free Day at the park. Food and drinks (as long as they last) are free as well.

YARD WORK PARTY AT MMC - Saturday, April 27
It's spring cleaning time at the MMC and we're looking for volunteers to pitch in on landscaping and yard maintenance.
We'll gather for coffee at 8:30 and begin work at 9 a.m. From 9-noon we'll power wash some areas surrounding the building and spread bark dust in the plant beds.
Donate your time and/or equipment - the supplies we need to get the work done are:
A power washer
A mulcher
Work gloves
Wheelbarrows
Rakes
If you have any of the above items you would be willing to donate, and/or if you would like to help out, please contact Mazama member Steve Polzel, steve_polzel(at)hotmail.com.
CLIMB NIGHT -- Monday, May 6
The Adventurous Young Mazamas is pleased to bring back Climb Night for the Winter 2012-2013 season. Every winter, AYM hosts a monthly climb night at Club Sport in Tigard. We climb the first Monday of every month from November to May. The last Climb Night of the season is scheduled for Monday May 6th from 7pm to 11pm. We have worked with Club Sport to offer a special rate of $10 for Mazama members ($15 for non members). Harnesses and rock shoes are available for rental. All are welcome to attend! We especially welcome recent BCEP graduates to join us. Bring a friend with you but if you don’t have a belay partner, we’ll set you up with one. Climb Night is a great way to practice your climbing skills at the largest rock climbing facility in Oregon. CELEBRATE THE FIRST AMERICANS ON MT. EVEREST -- April 20, 2013 and May 22, 2013
2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the first American ascent of Mount Everest. The Mountaineers is honoring two of Everest’s history makers: Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Everest, and Tom Hornbein, the first American (along with teammate Willi Unsoeld) to summit Everest via the West Ridge. Please help raise vital funds for Mountaineers programs by joining us for two exclusive events:

EXPLORING EASTER ISLAND AND THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA -- Wednesday March 27
In December 2012, Steve Bleiler spent a month long solstice party hiking Easter Island and Tierra del Fuego, in addition to x-country skiing, climbing, and exploring the Antarctic Peninsula with Quark Expeditions. Come share in the splendor and mystery of the Rapa Nuian Moai monuments, Easter Island’s Crater Lake and of the parks at “del fin del Mundo”. Our adventure then takes us across the Drake Passage aboard the Ocean Diamond, to experience the presence of orcas and humpbacks under the midnight sun, to climb and x-country ski Antarctic ridges, hike through penguin colonies, explore century old whaling and research stations, zodiac raft through iceberg fields set amongst the sublime beauty of the Antarctic Peninsula, finally re-crossing the Drake and rounding Cape Horn on the way home. Party on!

VALHALLA'S PROVINCIAL PARK -- Wednesday April 10
Gimli Peak via the South Ridge route (5.10a) is one of the best rock climbs in its class anywhere in the world. It is one of Fred Beckey’s, “100 Favorite North American Climbs” and rightfully so.
Gimli Peak is located in the Kootenay district of southeastern British Columbia. It lies on the southern border of Valhalla Provincial Park, west of Slocan Lake in the Southern Selkirk mountains.
In June 2012, Adam Baylor and Ken Allen climbed Gimli’s South Ridge and will share their adventure via video, photos and story. The climb was partially funded by an American Alpine Club, Live Your Dream Grant.

NEW HIKES IN NORTHWEST OREGON AND WASHINGTON -- Wednesday April 17

Hiking guru Bill Sullivan takes us on a slide show tour of new and changed trails he discovered for the new fourth edition of “100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon & Southwest Washington, ” released in April 2013.
We’ll find a hidden lake at Mt. Adams, hike to a wildflower hill above Hood River, explore a new path to Fish Creek Mountain, and see what’s been changed by the fires at Mt. Hood. As always, expect anecdotes about geology, history, and wildlife along the way.

11TH ANNUAL CHEMEKETAN ROUTE FINDING SCHOOL -- February 21, 23, 24
The 11th Annual Chemeketan Route Finding School will take place this week. The Map Reading Session will take place on Thursday night (Feb 21) at the Chemekeden beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Map and Compass session will take place on Saturday (Feb 23) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the GPS session will be Sunday (Feb 24) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
